When certain groups of students don’t fare as well academically as others do, an achievement gap can occur. Low-income students, students with disabilities, and students from certain racial and ethnic backgrounds are among those who could be at risk of struggling academically. There are, however, college and university programs, as well as scholarships, that might help close the achievement gap. The federal government, for one, awards TRIO grants to colleges and universities throughout the country.

These institutions put the grant money to programs and services especially intended to help at-risk students successfully obtain college and university degrees. TRIO money can go toward projects and services such as tutoring, assistance with study skills and obtaining financial aid, such as scholarships. Many non-profit foundations also make scholarships available to students with disabilities, as well as those with chronic illnesses. From immune deficiencies and asthma to lupus and visual impairments, students with disabilities and chronic illnesses have a number of affliction-specific scholarships to help them pay for a college or university education. Scholarships for some of these afflictions include:

Scholarships for Students with Autism: The Autism Society of America provides recognizes individuals through a CVS/All Kids Can Scholars program and Outstanding Individual with Autism of the Year awards; the Organization for Autism Research’s Schwallie Family Scholarship Program provides $3,000 for students with autism or Asperger Symdrome who are attending two- and four-year colleges, as well as vocational, or technical, schools.

Scholarships for Students with Cystic Fibrosis: The Cystic Fibrosis Scholarship Foundation provides undergraduate scholarships of about $1,000 based on academic achievements, as well as financial needs and leadership abilities. The Elizabeth Nash Foundation provides scholarships of $500 to $2,000 for students with cystic fibrosis in undergraduate and graduate school programs. In addiotion, the Abbott Pharmaceuticals’ SolvayCARES scholarships of $2,500 are also available to students with cystic fibrosis, who might also be eligible for an additional $15,500 as part of a Thriving Student Achiever Contest.

Scholarships for Students with Hearing Impairments: The Alexander Graham Bell Association for Deaf and Hard of Hearing offers financial assistance to students ages 21 and younger who are enrolled in a mainstream school program. This same organization offers George H. Nofer Scholarships for Law and Public Policy scholarships for students in full-time law school programs and those in full-time graduate school programs in public policy or administration.

Scholarships for Students with Learning Disabilities and ADHD: The National Center for Learning Disabilities awards Anne Ford and Allegra Ford Scholarships of $10,000 in four annual installments to high school seniors with learning disabilities who plan to work toward a bachelors degree. The Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic awards Marion Huber Learning Through Listening scholarships to high school senior members who have learning disabilities.

Scholarships for Students with Physical Disabilities: The ChairScholars Foundation awards national scholarships of as much as $20,000 to low-income high school seniors and college and university freshmen who have severe physical disabilities. The foundation also has scholarship programs where awards are extended on a more regional basis, to Florida and metropolitan New York students.

Writers in general, struggle with how to compose the introduction to a book or story. They know that if the introduction is drab and non-stimulating, the reader is apt to put it down, never to glance at the second paragraph. If the introduction is engaging and interesting, the reader will want to read further to see what happens or how it ends.

Scholarship essays are no different and should be of the highest caliber and they should be written in way that move your readers.

The opening of any scholarship essay is the introduction. The introduction can be composed in several styles but it should be very stimulating and replete of information about the topic of the essay. Three types of introductions are:

1) A general/overall statement: This type of opening gives a larger view before bringing the reader to the detail. By expanding the scope of the subject the author is able to move the reader. But the induction should be materially correct and closely aligned to the topic. Furthermore it should be associated with the angle of the subject.

2) A quote involving the subject: This type of presentation assists the readers to engage but if the quotation is digressive then the opening appears to be forced. Every now and then, one has the temptation to bring about a quotation for its own sake; this is a pointless show of learning. When employing a quotation, be sure to use a quotation that is provoking and states something substantial. The scholarship essay that follows should explain the meaning of the quotation or the resolve for using it in your essay. Your essay must build upon the quotation so that readers will want to read further to find out what you have to say.

3) An anecdote or allegory: Begin by telling a brief story. Many writers begin their introductions with an anecdote or a short story that catches the reader’s attention. Make certain the anecdote or short story brings out distinctly the story that comes after it. If the short story gets too long the content is lost sight of. More over anecdote should be interesting and sensational.

The second component of writing a scholarship essay is the main body of the paper. The main body of the paper will discuss in particular all the substantive matters of the paper.

The last part of the essay is the conclusion, and here the writer will sum up the complete findings of the paper before finally closing the paper. Make sure that with any of the methods you use to introduce your essay, you conclude the introductory paragraph with a solid, well-developed, and thoughtful thesis statement.

The language of the essay should be plain and it should be composed in an effective and interesting manner.

Now you are off to a great start. The introduction is no longer a barrier to writing an excellent scholarship essay that you know you can write.

There is no arguing with the fact that a college education is important for better paying jobs. In the job market today, a degree is essential. First is the Deborah Wolfe Fellowship which gives African Americans a chance to study abroad. This cultivates better learning around the world as well as it can make the student well renowned around the world.

There is also the National Black Nurses Association Ambi-Kiwi Scholarship which is a scholarship that targets students who want to pursue a career as a nurse.

Third is the Dr. Marie-France Desrosiers Memorial Scholarship which focuses on students who want to study at the Barry University with a course of Psychology. This scholarship provides an excellent opportunity for students because Psychology is a sought after degree for a lot of students.

Then there is the Oakwood College United Negro College Fund that targets students who want to enroll at Oakwood College as freshmen. It can go up to $2,000.

Lastly, the Nancy Wolridge Graduate Fellowship is a scholarship that is for Black Women in America who has an average of 2.0 GPA. It is easy to get this because there are no males involved anymore.

These are just some specific scholarships African Americans can get. Remember there are also the general scholarships and all of us have a fair chance to get them. So use all of your resources and start your research. Take advantage of this chance to get a brighter future and get a career. This would lead to high paying jobs and security.
