The lifetime learning tax credit is available to taxpayers who file their return of income and owe taxes. It is a tax credit, and not a deduction.

Criteria for eligibility

You need to fulfill all of the following conditions in order to be eligible to claim the lifetime learning credit -

a.	You are paying tuition fees and related expenses for your higher education
b.	You are an eligible student.
c.	You are claiming the credit for yourself, your spouse or for a dependent. So either the parent or the child can claim lifetime learning credit.

If you are planning to continue your education for a long time, this tax credit comes to your help. A family can claim up to $2,000 every year towards this credit. The credit is limited to 20 per cent of first $10,000 of educational expenses. The specialty of this credit is – it is available for all the years of post-secondary education and thereafter for any number of years. It is even available for courses taken up to acquire or improve your job skills. The only condition is you should file a tax return and owe some tax to claim this credit.

Taxpayers with a modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) above $58,000 ($116,000 for married filing jointly) are not eligible to claim lifetime learning credit. The limits are increased by $1,000 ($2,000 for married filing jointly) in the year 2008. If you are enrolled for an undergraduate or graduate degree program or enrolled for a course of instruction to acquire/improve your job skills, you qualify for this credit.

How to get it?

The educational institutions have to send details of tuition fees in the form 1098-T to the students as well as to the IRS before January 31, 2009. This statement also includes contact information at the institution in case any student has any question about the form. Sometimes it may be advisable to speak to a tax consultant for calculations of tax credit.

The lifetime learning tax credit is available for the expenses paid in 2008 for the enrolment during 2008 or for any course beginning before March 31, 2009. So if you have paid $1,800 on December 20, 2008 for a course commencing on March 1, 2009, this amount qualifies for lifetime learning tax credit for the tax year 2008.

Can you claim multiple benefits?

You cannot claim the benefits of lifetime learning credit and hope credit. You have to select one out of these two. Generally for the first two years of your post-school education, you should go for hope credit. However for subsequent years you have to go for lifetime learning credit. A family can claim both these credits for different family members in the same year. However the family cannot exceed the limit of lifetime learning credit for one year, which is $2,000.

There are some special features of the lifetime learning credit. It is allowed for more than one course at the same time. Also there is no limitation on how many years the taxpayer can take this credit. You can go on claiming this credit even for your lifetime! The only restriction is – if the modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds the qualifying limits, the credit gets reduced or eventually eliminated. You cannot claim this credit by paying the fees in advance. The only exception is, you can pay fees and using a calendar year in order to cover academic period commencing before March 31 of the following year. If a student has a felony drug conviction, he’s not eligible to claim the hope credit but such rule does not exist for the lifetime learning credit.

Remember, if you are paying your tuition fees out of a tax free scholarship, then this credit is not available to you. Also if you are married and filing separately, you cannot claim this credit.

One of the hardest things for anyone to do for many people is to come up with money to pay for college. College can cost several thousands of dollars, and while many people get student loans, or try to pay out of pocket, some are discovering the wide world of grants. Paying for college can be a burden for some, but it is made ten times harder for single mothers. Single mothers often find that paying for college is not only difficult, it’s overwhelming. However, there is hope, and many single parents are finding that there is free money given out in the form of single mom grants for higher learning.

Being a mother is a great responsibility, and it is one that can push aside college educations. It’s a large burden to not only support a family alone but also support education costs. A woman trying to go back to school or continue her education is really burdened by financial struggles that arise, and can prove difficult. Finding help for single mom’s can seem like a painstaking task, but it is possible. There are large amounts of single mom grants, specifically formulated to help lift, and eliminate the burden of large payments that must be made to get an education.

It has been said that getting a good education can be a great thing. In fact, many statistics show that a college-educated person can make a lot of money over the course of their career. For a single mother, making a larger income can provide much needed financial support for her and her family. It’s important for women that have children not to lose hope on getting a good education. Having a child is a blessing, and shouldn’t be seen as a hindrance at all. There are helping hands in the form of government grants, college specific grants, and scholarships to assist with paying for higher learning with relative ease.

If you or someone you know has a child and wants to go back to school but doesn’t know how to go about it, or simply can’t afford it. Consider telling them about the great options that are available for single moms. Single mom grants can pay for a whole education and they don’t need to be paid back. There are also scholarship plans that are set up for women that have children that want to better themselves with a good education, and those too you do not have to pay back. For women that can’t afford student loans, or simply don’t qualify, a government grant or scholarship could really be a lifesaver. It just takes a little bit of searching and applying, that’s it.

There are around 30 million people that will receive government money for college. A grand portion of these people are single moms, taking advantage of the grants that are specifically given to them so that they can rise up and support their family by getting a better education. Getting higher education has never been easier, and cost effective.

In an age where educating children is becoming more and more expensive, relief for both students and parents comes in the form of scholarships. Graduate fellowships and undergraduate scholarships are types of aid that help students pay for their education. Scholarships and fellowships, unlike student loans, do not need to be repaid. In usual circumstances, scholarships are granted to students who are exceptionally brilliant in their studies, or in the field of athletics or art.

However, from time to time, colleges and other private sponsors of scholarships set up scholarships with mysterious eligibility requirements. These have come to be known as the unusual scholarships for students, an example being a scholarship for left-handed students. The Frederick and Mary F. Beckley Scholarship of up to $1,000 is the only scholarship for left-handed students. This scholarship is awarded to left-handed students who will be either attending or already enrolled at the Juniata College.

Though very few in numbers, they do manage to attract a lot of attention due to the slightly offbeat nature of the scholarship.

Unusual scholarships allow a student the chance to explore a wide variety of skills, interests, characteristics and talents that could make him/her eligible for a scholarship. Scholarships in the unusual category range from grants for accordion players, asthma patients, amateur radio operators, bird watchers, bicyclists, blind students, boy scouts and girl scouts, bowlers, cartoon experts, children of veterans, choral singers, cheerleaders, debaters, entrepreneurs, farmers, French speakers, Gospel musicians, grandchildren of alumni, Huguenot descendants, never married students, overweight students, etc. This list just gives a glimpse at some of the categories, while in actual, there are much more of such unusual scholarship requirements, new ones are also being added on a regular basis.

Another unusual scholarship is the ‘Duck Brand Duct Tape Stuck at Prom Contest’.
This contest, open to students who are US citizens, of 14 years of age or older, and who are attending a high school prom in the spring, requires the couple to wear a complete attire or accessories made from duct tape. The main prize for the contest includes a $2,500 scholarship for each member along with a $2,500 cash prize to the school that hosted the prom.

Meanwhile, to win the $7,500 Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) Award, open to graduating high school senior scholar athletes, candidates need to excel in academics, athletic performance, along with leadership and community service. The Students for Organ Donation Youth Leadership Award, which awards two scholarships of $500 to $1,000 each, is available to undergraduate college students or high school students who commit to raise awareness about organ donation and transplantation.

Similarly, there are many such kinds of obscure scholarships which aid students in carrying on with their higher education. While some people might ridicule the nature of these scholarships and awards, it is worth-a-while to take note of how many students benefit from such esoteric financial aid schemes every year.

What is a scholarship? A scholarship is an amount of money applied straightforwardly to your college costs that you are awarded based on academic good point, financial want, or a combination of the two. There you will receive scholarships in some form to help you compensate your fees, books, room, and sometimes other expenditures such as travel. It is said that there is billion dollars financial help out there. There are many minority, career, or grade specific scholarships out there and to go through them and find out they don’t apply to you is a little discouraging but as long as you’ve done impressive thing or can make an essay, there is probability a scholarship out there for you.

What’s scholarship essentially worth? There is no set amount that you can guess from college scholarships. Every scholarship come from a special source and award amount of money based on various conditions. For instance, you may obtain scholarship from your local supermarkets with amount smaller than the one you receive from a National Corporation scholarship. Scholarships may be a one-occasion award, or they may lengthen over some semesters or years. If they are not one-occasion sum of money, so probably you need to keep a definite GPA to keep the scholarship.

For what basis can I obtain scholarships? Most people think of scholarships as rewards for A students – that’s true for a little percentage of scholarships. However, most scholarships are based on various qualities and accomplishments: academics, test scores, ethnic origin, employer, career purposes, selection of major, etc. And while many scholarships are based on your plus points in competition with other students, many scholarships, first and foremost those awarded by colleges, are based on financial need as well as your brilliance, or just financial need by itself.

Where should I look for scholarships?

Look Online. Scholarship search databases hold a lot of scholarships. Many won’t be quite right for you, or are very small awards; but others may really suit you. But don’t apply to a hundred scholarships just because they’re there. As an alternative, pick out a dozen or so that perfectly fit your needs and qualities, and fill out the best application you probably can for those.

Look In Your Own Locality. There are local communities, clubs, local newspaper, the power plant, etc. They may award scholarships to college students in area. To find these scholarships, you’ll need to seek. Read your local paper, especially the community news. Call local agencies and ask if they sponsor any college scholarships. Call local television station and large employers in your area to ask that. Sometimes, some employers provides small scholarships; so have your parents ask their employers if there are scholarships for children of employees.

Speak With Your College Authority. By talking to the persons in the office of the college, you may be able to get some guides on scholarships that are detailed to students. Let them know when you speak to them how serious you are, and they will probably give you help. If you’re going to do great effort financially, let them in the office know this. There are programs to help students who really wants. People in the office will know how to get that money.

In order to obtain these free aid you must fill out applications and write papers, they are hard work but as it says in numerous scholarship books, if you are willing to do the work for one, you are possibly already half done with the next one. Make sure you save a copy of every single one of the extra-curriculars that you took part. Don’t forget to keep those recommendations handy. These are kinds of files that you’ll just need to use over and over.

In your paper, focus on yourself. A scholarship is often awarded in a very subjective way. Many awards committees, faced with kids they really like, choose the one they like the best. And they decide that based primarily on the paper. Besides, it is often best to plan out what you’re going to say, and be sincere; too much buff up can work against you if it makes you seem insincere. Tell about yourself with description and scenery that demonstrates how that things changed you in a way that makes you a right candidate. Of course, each awards committee is special in their judgment. But they will be impressed if you make sure that your grammar and spelling are faultless.

Of course, the amount of scholarship sources is limited. However, that doesn’t suggest that you shouldn’t try to acquire your fair share. In reality, many people give up and say I can’t possibly succeed. That’s plainly not right. At least you’ve got to try to have your part of those scholarship aid.

In the past, employers and many others frowned upon online degree programs. They believed that the best education was attained by following traditional pathways. Specifically, degree-seekers were expected to attend a conventional “brick and mortar” school and experience campus life. Consequently, schooling online was deemed a whim that would disappear gradually. Additionally, employers believed people who graduated from online schools lacked discipline, were easily distracted and overall poor candidates for the work marketplace. Their beliefs were far from the truth.

According to studies conducted by SRI International, “Students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction.” Therefore, it is not surprising that the U.S. Department of Education gave online learning its stamp of approval. As it happens, many moms are taking advantage of this advanced educational vehicle by logging on to learn through online degree programs.

In truth, the Obama administration’s “Mom Return to School Scholarship and Grant Program” encourages moms to complete school through online degree programs. As a matter of fact, President Obama’s financial pledge to education supports this ideology in the form of Pell Grants and other incentives. Thus, the Obama administration validates online education for moms who are single and work low-paying jobs. On the other hand, while the focus is on moms, the new stimulus bill does not rebuff others who want to return to school. All persons who qualify can reap the benefits.

Needless to say, more opportunities are available for moms to return to school. Gone are complaints that time and money are obstacles. Moms no longer have to choose between returning to school and being “just” mom. President Obama’s stimulus incentives and online degree programs afford opportunities to be both students and moms. More to the point, moms have opportunities of a lifetime to fulfill their dreams. The brass ring is there for the taking.

Today, online degrees stand at the same level as that of the “brick and mortar” degrees, with financial aid being offered to every student.

According to the US Department of Education, more than 9 million students acquire some kind of assistance – loans or grants – every year, with around $83 billion in 2008. It is becoming more and more obvious that in the absence of aid most students would be out of college.

Distance learning is developing because it enables students to work their own schedules, keep away from traffic, parking, and paying for gas. Though from time to time, trickier to stay focused without the physical attendance of an instructor the payoff for those who do is huge. Most online degrees are completed faster.

But, the real concern is how an online program is chosen and how an aid is located. The solution is not that troublesome as it appears. Answer thee questions and you’ll understand. First – are you in search of an online associates degree, an online bachelor’s degree, an online master’s degree or an online doctoral program? What are the subjects of your interest? Next, visit a reliable online education portal in order to choose the programs that interest you the most. Ask for further information and do not even think about getting enrolled unless you are given all of the tuition and financial assistance information. Be watchful and solely opt for the program that gives you the best education for your money. Get comprehensive knowledge about grants and low interest loans. Have a loan of as little money as possible – keep in mind that you will have to repay it.

Do not allow anyone talk you into getting enrolled before you have completely analyzed all of your options.

By: Sheila Danzig

About the Author:

These days’ finances are hard enough to balance and manage. This is especially true when you are a mother. With the economy in a slump, it’s hard enough for mothers to keep their heads above water. If you add trying to manage costly tuition to the mix, it’s no wonder more and more moms are choosing to put off going back to school.

Does this sound like you?

Luckily, when money is not on our side (yes, I am a school-bound mother) President Obama is!

He has institutionalized a scholarship specifically for mothers who want to further their education. Imagine being able to receive up to $10,000 to help with the costs of your education. Obama’s “Scholarship for Moms” program is driven to see that every woman’s dreams can come true!

But what if you could use the money for more than just the cost of the classes? Sounds too perfect right? Wrong. With this scholarship, you are free to use the money on the courses, textbooks, supplies, even food and daycare.

Money is not the only thing preventing mothers from going back to school. There is also the time-crunch concern. Not many mothers have the ability or the resources to get to a classroom. Does that mean this mother is out of luck? Nope. There are plenty of scholarships available, under Obama’s plan, that allow for online higher education learning. Now mothers have the ability and funding to learn right from their own home. (A very nice option I opted for myself)

It’s a proven fact that people who have a Bachelor’s degree have up to 5 times the earning potential than people without. Obama wants every woman to realize her potential and succeed in college! Undoubtedly this is more likely when you don’t have to stress over the financials associated with getting your education.

By: Lindsy B.

In order to experience some Tax relief, you should adjust your withholding if there is going to be a significant change in the anticipated tax you will owe fro the following year. Tax credits such as child tax, Hope Scholarship and lifetime learning should also reduce your tax and offer some Tax relief.

By decreasing you withholding you might be able to benefit from lower taxes throughout the year, but an increase might also be wise if any previously claimed credits and deductions are no longer available to you. It is also wise to increase your withholding if you expect and increase in non-wage income. The form W-4 includes clear instructions on how to go about this.

In order to ensure that your tax withholdings provide maximum Tax relief, you should ensure that your withholdings help you meet the existing tax requirements and that at the end of the year you have met at least 90% of your current or previous tax year liability. If you have only joined an employer part of the way through the year, you may also request that your employer base your withholding on the `part-year” method.

If you are getting married in during the tax year, and might be looking for some Tax relief, it might also be a good idea to change your withholding. It depends entirely upon how much you will be earning as a married couple and is entirely up to you. But if you have a substantial increase in earning it would more than likely be the best course of action to change your withholding. You should ideally we within $1 000 of your tax liability for the year end.

By: Noreen Centeno

About the Author:
